Christmas Eve 2017

Christmas Time

It’s Christmas time again.  Happy Christmas!

Another year is coming to an end and in just over one week it will be 2018.  Where do the years go?  The older I get the quicker the years go.

I have spent the last few weeks working on a course learning programming for building websites from scratch.  My information site got put on the back burner because I had an allotted time when I had to complete it.  Also my wife was unexpectedly taken into hospital and had to have  a major operation.  This through my plans out of the window.

I went for a job interview this week and haven’t heard the outcome yet.  If I get offered the job I am 99% certain I will decline the offer.  There are at least 18 roles available.  You work night shifts and one week-end work day shifts.  I was informed that the role had been created because they had won a contract and they need 24 hour cover to fulfil the contract.  I have since read that the contract they received is for up to three years.  My concern is job security.  If they lose the contract before three years or they do not win the tender in three years time I don’t think there will be a job.

My current job is secure, albeit I am going to variable shifts in  a couple of weeks.

This next year I want to work harder than this year and I want to meet a lot of the goals I am currently setting for myself.  I am spending a couple of days taking stock of where I am and where I want to be.  I am writing down my goals and making a list of the things I need to do to achieve my goals.

I withdrew some of my pension money and made a capital repayment on the mortgage.  I have paid £8,800 extra which is the maximum allowed per mortgage year.  I wanted to keep the monthly instalment the same but they would not do this.  I have set up an automated payment to transfer the money to a savings account with the Post Office.  I need to keep this money to either use for a pension later or to put towards paying off the mortgage when I can.  Our LPG cost has decreased from this month so that will also go into the savings account.

The current mortgage amount is £64,118.45.

November 28th 2017

Today is the first time I have posted without an image at the top of the page.  I haven’t had time to find one.

After a break of about four weeks I am back at my favourite garden centre restaurant and it is nice and quiet.  I haven’t been here recently because of major roadworks and long queues.  Roadworks are ongoing in the area but this no longer affects my route.

Last week I traded in my Android tablet to Currys.  I probably could have got more money by selling it on eBay but I would have had more hassle.  I would have had to package it and then take it to be posted and then the thought of it might get lost in the post.  Also the buyer might have had an issue.  In the end I chose the easiest option.  I now have a Lenovo which is a tablet but also has a keyboard which it clips into.  Plus it is Windows and easier to use for the purpose I need it.  Also the keyboard is a lot better to type on than the Bluetooth one I used for the tablet and it has the £ sign!

I spent a fair amount of money over the week-end because I needed various software and took the opportunity to purchase it while they had good discounts on.  I bought quite a few different software packages but they will all be used in the businesses I am starting.

I have considered various options regarding my pension because I am at the age where I can withdraw some and continue working.  It is more cost effective to overpay the amount on the mortgage which I am allowed to each year and pay income tax on 75% of the withdrawal.  The only issue is the withdrawal is worked out at various tax bands and therefore I have overpaid tax.  I completed the form today to get the overpayment back.  When I spoke to the tax office they said it can take 30 days for them to process the form.  I should receive the pension money in my account in the next few days.

I have been busy opening various bank accounts.  I will pay off the full amount I am allowed this tax year on the mortgage and save the rest.  I already have a regular saver account with Nationwide so will feed as much into that account each month as I am allowed.  I will open a regular saver with First Direct.  I have opened a TSB account so that I can open a regular saver account with them and a current account with Tesco which pays good interest.

I am still working on my insurance site abd this is now taking shape.  Another few weeks and i will be ready to launch.  The date has been put back one last time and I will have it launched by the end of the year.  i hate this time of the year with dark nights because after a day at work and a drive home I start feeling tired quite early.  Probably my age.  😉

My daughter and her fiancée are moving in with us for a few weeks while their property purchase goes through.

i have been trying to decide which online storage to use for my business documents and I have decided to use Onedrive because I got a good two year deal on Microsoft Office 365 when I purchased the tablet.  i have just had to purchase a new PC as well because our old one was put together by someone and keeps crashing with a blue screen.  The replacement PC was on a good deal with £180 off.  both myself and my wife use the PC.

Closer than yesterday

Today is October 27th.  The month is coming to a close and we are only two months away from the end of the year.  The days and weeks pass very quickly.  This is one of my usual comments but it remains as true as ever.

I have had a week off work this week.  I went on a day out which was enjoyable and ment I was away from home.  Housework hs been done this week and one or two other small jobs.

I am currently enoying a coffee in the garden centre and the area where Iam sitting is currently empty and quiet.  As with each week I hve off I always think I am going to get a lot of things done.  In reality it never works out like this because jobs take longer than planned.

I am still working on the insurance site and have quite a lot of work to do on this because I will be happy launching it.  This site has taken a lot longer than I had planned because ‘life’ gets in the way.  As the picture states I am one step closer to where I want to be than I was yesterday.  It’s a marathon not a sprint.

I’m reminded of a conversation I had at work on Christmas Eve in 2017 when I said I wanted to be working for myself by the following Christmas.  It is almost two years since I made the comment and Iam still working for the same company.

I have a lot of plans for the rest of this year and into 2018 which I need to becaome a reality.  It is almost the time of year which Idon’t like.  I don’t mind it getting darker earlier, but I dislike driving in the dark.  It means for four months I have to drive home in the dark.  Working from home would mean I wouldn’t need to do this.

I feel frustrated tht I am still not working for myself and haven’t achieved what I wnt to.  I was going to say that Ihaven’t achieved my dreams.  However, it is goals I need to achieve.  A goal is a dream with a date where you want to achieve something.

I need to put some structure in my weeks so I dedicate a set time for the various things I need to achieve.

Thursday Update

Press On

Well, I finally got about the hours today and they are forcing me to move to fully variable shifts in January.  I am uncertain whether at the week-end I could work till 9pm or finish at 6:30pm.

I am not looking forward to the hours because we only have one car so it means I will have to bus a lot of the time.  If I get an 8am start I need to leave home at 5:30am to get there on time.  When I finish in the evening there are very few buses.  Uncertain what will happen when I get evening shifts.  I either have to wait hours for the bus or someone has to drive 20 miles to collect me.  A lot of people are in the same situation as myself.  Morale at work has hit an all time low.  The other issue is if I have to catch a bus I either pay £7.70 per day or £106.40 per month.  This will put another squeeze on the finances because we will still have to run the car as well as having to buy a bus ticket.

I am going to continue to press on toward my goal of working for myself.  I am currently getting on with my insurance site.  Skillshare have sent me an email about creating a training course by the end of September and you receive $100. I think it is only if you have never created a course.  I was hoping to do one last October when they ran the promotion but did not have time.

I have someone who is currently transferring my websites to a new hosting service.  This has gone fairly smoothly apart from one site which is my main site.

I’m unsure where the time goes.  It is almost the week-end again, although I am working six hours on Saturday.  I can’t believe we are almost at the end of August.  Time just seems to fiy by.  I can’t remember the time going this quick when I was a lot younger.

When I eventually leave work I will have some shares to sell because I am in the scheme where I buy one share and they give me two free.  Quite a few companies offer this.  I would have to pay tax and national insurance on them because I have not held them long enough for them to be tax free.

I have booked one night at a hotel in a suite.  We normally stay in a double room but we had over £150 on our Tesco Clubcard vouchers.  We are going to a Hilton hotel which we stayed in before.  the cost to us is £21.  We will go out for the day and then go to the hotel around 6pm and chill out.

It’s unusual for me to post twice in one week.  A previous comment left was that I should have been working for myself by now  If I had got my act together and was working for myself I wouldn’t have even known about the hours change.

I’m off to get on with my business work and will check in another day.
